Raise the Roof
Being diagnosed with cancer is a life changing experience. Once the initial shock passes and treatment is planned, patients then need to organise where to stay in Bendigo while receiving up to six weeks cancer treatment. This is how the 'Raise the Roof' accommodation helps our cancer patients. Imagine, having to leave home for up to six weeks, wondering who looks after your home, children, pets, garden and then on top of that, where do you stay while you are in Bendigo. ‘Raise the Roof’ is a wonderful story that began in 2000, when a group of community minded people, who had themselves travelled and received Radiotherapy treatment for cancer in Melbourne. Mr Dick Hazeldene and Mrs Lola Miller acted as patrons of the ‘Raise the Roof’ appeal and rallied the support of the community to raise enough funds to purchase six accommodation units in Nolan Street, Bendigo. The aim was to offer accommodation in Bendigo rather than expecting patients to travel and stay in Melbourne. The ‘Raise the Roof’ project was an instant success and patients from throughout the Loddon Mallee region were able to access low-cost home-like accommodation while they received up to six weeks of cancer treatment. In 2007 a second Linear Accelerator was funded by the Victorian Government, this meant that more patients could be treated for cancer. This increase also meant that there was no longer enough accommodation to cope with the number of patients. That’s when Bendigo Health relaunched the ‘Raise the Roof’ appeal and began seeking community support to continue this project. Six accommodation units in Lucan Street proved to be an ideal location for the next six ‘Raise the Roof’ accommodation units. Through many generous donations both of cash and services the units were quickly renovated and refurnished. Many supporters helped with this project but it was Margot Spalding of Jimmy Possum furniture who knocked us off our feet when she offered to fully furnish the six units. Thanks sincerely Margot!
The story of ‘Raise the Roof’ doesn’t end there ... we still have to complete the back yards and BBQ areas of both locations. These are very important to allow patients the opportunity to support each other while they receive cancer treatment. The patients call it happy hour when they all get together for a chat, we hope it is a happy time for them and that they remember the generosity of the community when they stay in this comfortable accommodation. The story continues...
